Deerhoof
Whether you're a long-time follower or have never listened to the music of indie rock veterans Deerhoof - 2023 is the perfect year to jump into the band's deep and exceptional catalog. Their latest record, Miracle-Level (released April of '23) is a tremendous meld of quirky, angular grooves, highly orchestrated dual guitar acrobatics, beautiful floating vocal melodies, and straight-up brute force. The new record stays true to the Deerhoof tradition of avoiding predictable patterns with one unexpected turn after another, all the while layering in gorgeous melodies with infectious indie-pop appeal.
The record's first video features the track, Sit Down, Let Me Tell You a Story. This killer song is part and parcel to the larger Deerhoof approach to musical arrangements. A Deerhoof song might begin with a particular vibe, but the opening moments often give little indication of where the tune is going or how it will get there. Sit Down, Let Me Tell You a Story opens with a lovely melody from bassist/singer Satomi Matsuzaki, but quickly moves to a jarring King Crimson-esque guitar riff from the guitar tandem of John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez. From there we continue down a road of twists and turns that never fail to surprise and excite.

Source Audio was originally introduced to the members of Deerhoof by our old friend Christopher Venter, the owner of SHOE Pedals and major collaborator on our ZIO Analog Front End+Boost pedal. Christopher's excellent Frog and Pixel pedals have shown up on multiple Deerhoof recordings. Since our introduction we've seen Satomi and John turn to a number of Source Audio pedals to help them in their never-ending hunt for perfect and perfectly mangled tones. Band favorites include the ZIO Analog Front End+Boost, True Spring Reverb, C4 Synth, and EQ2 Programmable Equalizer.
Deerhoof are currently on tour in support of Miracle-Level. There are still several dates scheduled this summer across the US before they head over to Europe in early August. We highly encourage you to go see them when they come to your town. And you absolutely must check out Miracle-Level (see below). This is the band's 19th release, so if you dig Miracle-Level, there is a world of Deerhoof music waiting for you.

Speaking of Deerhoof's enormous back-catalog, how about we take a look at some earlier material. Here is a killer performance of the song "Fresh Born" off of their 2008 record "Offend Maggie." This performance from the "Juan's Basement" series (hosted by Pitchfork magazine) really captures the ferocity of this band in a big way.
