Carl Broemel
We recently had the great pleasure of visiting our old friend Carl Broemel prior to My Morning Jacket's show at Roadrunner in Boston, MA. The incredibly prolific band was touring in support of their brilliant self-titled record released in 2021 (yes, it's called "My Morning Jacket," but it is far from their debut record) as well as the Deluxe Edition re-release of their epic 2011, "Circuital." Carl told us how they had just completed a 3-night-stand at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, where they didn't repeat a single song over the course of the 3 nights. Like I said, My Morning Jacket is a prolific band.
Source Audio's history with My Morning Jacket actually goes back quite a long time. It has been reported that MMJ guitarist and singer Jim James ripped a hole in the universe with our Hot Hand Ring and during a monumental guitar solo at Bonnaroo in 2008. If anybody out there finds video footage of this legendary performance, please send it our way :-). During My Morning Jacket's most recent tour, Carl is using the Spectrum Intelligent Filter as well as the C4 Synth in his pedal steel board. Carl was nice enough to show us how he uses the Spectrum Intelligent Filter's Tron effect (based on a Mu-Tron) to give his pedal steel a wonderful vocal quality. We were quite taken with how seamless the Spectrum's envelope filter blended with the instrument. The Instagram post below includes a wonderful sound sample of this performance.

Carl's PedalboardWe managed to snap this photo of Carl's pedal steel pedalboard, which you can occupies quite a bit of real estate on the MMJ stage. Zoom in really close on this photo and you can see Carl's Spectrum Intelligent Filter settings (with the toggle switch set to "TRON"). It sounds great on pedal steel, but we copied those settings back here at Source Audio headquarters and the preset sounds quite spectacular on guitar as well. Punch "Carl's Pedal Steel" in the search field of Neuro if you want to download this sound directly to your Spectrum Intelligent Filter or C4 Synth.

If you haven't heard My Morning Jacket's latest release yet, we highly recommend you give it a listen. It's everything we've come to expect from MMJ. Jim James' incredible songwriting is on full display with Carl and the rest of the band's consistently unpredictable arrangements and instrumental coloring. The lead track, "Regularly Scheduled Programming" perfectly mixes together menacing grooves and unexpected turns with soaring and beautiful melodies.
