Did anyone see the VH1 Rock Honors show last week?
I am quite skeptical of shows like these - but I sure am glad that I watched it. http://vh1blog.vh1.com/rock_honors/index.html
Performances by Ozzy, Heart, Keane (honoring Genesis), Genesis, Queens of the Stone Age (honoring Sabbath) and ZZ Top.
How can you not want to hear Billy Gibbons?
But my favorite without a doubt was Alice in Chains (r.i.p. Layne) with "country" singer Gretchen Wilson doing a great rendition of Heart's "Barracuda" - I think she blew everyone's mind with that version. Here it is! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RjA_Z6Lniw
I have always totally grooved on that tune, and I have never heard it better. Heart always had a prominent Zeppelin influence, especially with the 7/8 riff on the ending - and the guitar solo on that tune always sounded great to me. It somehow reminds me of Blackmore with it's simplicity and execution, and Jerry Cantrell of AIC showed why he's such a complete rock player by doing that solo right, as well as the chunky rhythm parts. There's nowhere to hide when playing a sparse solo like that - every nuance of each note if hanging out for the world to see.
That solo (originally played by Roger Fisher - where is he now?) and the guitar over the "outro" had a great phase/flange to the sound - I could not help but think how much added expression one could add with the Hot Hand wireless controller. It would make those great parts even better!
Maybe I have to tune in to these shows more often.
