This is another report by the elusive, intrepid and fearless CEO of Source Audio, Roger Smith.
Daniela and I went to see what will likely be our final show of the season at the Bank of America Pavilion. Our streak of great shows in this special venue continued!! The band was My Morning Jacket, and they becoming big users of our products. We met guitarists Carl Broehmel and Jim James originally at Vegoose in 2006. While they were both taken by the Hot Hand concept at the time, the wired ring was too hard for live performances. One look at Jim James’ animated stage presence makes this very clear! A few months later we ran into them again at Langerado and gave them a wireless Hot Hand ring. Since then, the band has (in the words of the Boston Globe) “continued its climb toward the title of best live band in America”. They have also continued to integrate Source Audio product into their repertoire.
We have always suggested that Hot Hand can be used in either subtle or not so subtle ways. We have also suggested that Hot Hand can be used for more than just guitar applications. Perhaps no band makes these points more clearly that MMJ. While Jim James took Hot Hand to epic levels of showmanship during a 5 minute solo on the main stage at Bonnaroo, Carl uses the Hot Hand Wah to beautifully shape the notes when he plays the pedal steel. In Carl’s words, “I run out of feet when I play the pedal steel. Hot Hand allows me to create sounds that would be completely impossible with a standard effects pedal.” Check out Carl playing Hot Hand on their most recent album release, Evil Urges.
Jim James uses the Phaser Flanger in Hot Hand mode. It is a perfect accompaniment to his overall stage performance. When Jesse and I met with the band yesterday afternoon before the show, we ran through the Multiwave distortion with both Jim and Carl. I do not think it will be long before we see both of them using this product soon! One thing is for sure: in addition to being talented, these guys from Kentucky and Tennessee are as nice and thoughtful as them can be in person.
The MMJ set was a non-stop 3 hour bundle of energy. I see lots of live music, and it is rare to see a 3 hour set…..much less one that that is consistently engaging and entertaining. Finding a moment to reload beers was almost impossible! I hope MMJ goes a long way. Their music does not fit into any previous mold, the live shows are spectacular, and…..they like our products!!! Roger
