I was thinking this over the other day, when I saw the same topic posted on the Gear Page: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=251122
Players that seem to be able to afford anything using the generic inexpensive effects pedals always makes me wonder - can they not notice a difference between that and the high-end offerings, or are they more concerned with the easy replaceability of the "common" brands? Especially when you seem they playing a $3000+ electric guitar and an amp system that might run the same amount.
I had a plastic molded pedalboard of a famous "made in Japan" company in the 80's, as did most of us that could afford a custom Bradshaw switching unit. It did the job, but I always yearned for something better.
As we evolve as players, we incorporate the sounds that our effects are capable of into new musical statements and, just as we're always on the lookout for guitars and amps that will takes us somewhere new, the same should be true for effects in my book. Just as I had saved all my money for a Les Paul Deluxe in 1976, I also saved for a new MuTron III envelope filter. Where the MuTron is now, I'll never know. One thing's for sure, though - I'm keeping my Hot hand!
