How do you create new music when you are in a "rut"?
Happens to all of us - seriously - maybe others can't tell, but we know it.
And the easiest thing to do is to put the instrument away. But isn't that the easy way out???????
You've got to fight through it!!!!
Now, there are no "sure cures", of course - but the trick is to try numerous things until just ONE works.
Well, since you are online and have internet access (or how could you read this???), there are a million ways to get some new musical H2o into your system.
Go to YouTube and look up some musicians.
Go to MySpace and do the same.
Go to Music Player and watch some gear demos.
Search out some transcriptions to some songs you've always wanted to know. I like Tab Power for starters. Can't think of anything? Write down 5 influential recordings, and get the chord charts and learn the tunes. I did that with these albums:
Yes - Fragile
Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Doors - greatest hits
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
King Crimson - In the Wake of Posiedon
Try a new tuning. Start by changing one string, then try 2 then 3. I tuned my D string to C, and I have written 4 tunes that I would not have written otherwise - case in point.
The secret is to not get frustrated with your instrument when you can't come up with anything new. If you HAVE to put it down, that's fine - but don't do it out of defeat. Sometimes just learning a new chord progression is all the brain needs to get inspired.

youtube rocks! Go there and look up lessons or Steve Vai
