What does it mean when there are two lights lit up around the effects knob?

A common question we hear on the road when demoing our pedals is "What does it mean when there are two lights lit up around the effects knob?" An easy misconception is that it is a blend of the two effects on either side or that the pedal is defective/broken. In truth, the two lights are signifying that the effect type between them is currently selected. This was a design choice made by Source Audio to limit the number of LEDs on the interface to allow for a simpler design that could be consistent between models.

In this image, Effect #06 is currently selected.
In our Pro Series pedals, you can see a similar design theory in the Graphic Equalizers, which have a series of 5 LED lights on each frequency band that fade from one to another to allow for more selectabe options.

In this image, the selections on frequency bands 500 and 4K are represented by two LEDs at different intensities.
The theory in both of these examples is part of the common battle at Source Audio of 'more knobs vs. less knobs'. We find that the end result is an interface that allows you to do more with less.
