Gear Reviews,

Guitar Gearheads - What are we looking for?

Monday, March 12, 2007

If you're a musician, it's got to be something.

It's kind of like the game of hopscotch we used to play as kids. As soon as we land on one destination, we have to keep our minds on the next.

As we "gear-heads" aquire more and more gizmos - hopefully they don't end up in the closet. They need to be where we can use them for the purpose of why they were created in the first place - to make music!

Just as our wives/girlfriends loves to see what other people are wearing and buying, us guitar players need to know what other players are buying and lusting for. A few of my favorite sites to activate the GAS (Gear Aqisition Syndrome) bug are:

(http://vintageamps.com/plexiboard/index.php) - Plexi Palace - run by a great amp maker (his Mojave amps are outrageously good) and repair guru Vic Mason, with a very active message board visited by guitarists with more gear lust than you or I. If you want to rubberneck in a discussion regarding the types of wire used in pre-CBS Fender strat pickups, or want to know why the November 1967 Plexi Super Lead Marshalls sound so special (from people who search the globe for models of that rare distinction), this is the place for you.

(http://thegearpage.com) - The Gear Page is also a great site, with many of the same users at Plexi Palace. Superb forums on amps, effects, and boutique-sized guitar makers.

Another good one is Harmony Central (http://www.harmony-central.com). The forums are good, despite the high school type atmosphere. Just keep your head under your Kiss lunchbox when the food starts getting thrown. One favorite technique of the users is to debunk the manufacturers who put up false and glowing reviews in the user database. I guess they serve to keep the rest of us honest.

I browsed through the effects forum on the Plexi Palace today, and read discussions on the Mutron III, the differences between different Boss Overdrive pedals, and the similarities of the Fulltone Tube Tape Echo and the Maestro Echoplex.

Yes, there are others far, far sicker than you and I - and that's a somewhat comforting feeling.
