Wetlands Preserve Documentary on Sundance

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

I found this film on Sundance while channel surfing the other night - and instead of continually switching channels looking for the most annoying Billy Mays commercial, I was absolutely captivated by this documentary titled "Wetlands Preserved".

The musical history of Tribeca's Wetlands Preserve has got to rival that of CBGB's, or the Fillmore West and East. You have to include Wetlands Preserved as a must see. There is also a huge focus on the club's devoted ecolological responsibility - which is seen to be inseperable from the purity of the club's many inspiring bands.

Here's what the Sundance website had to write about it:

"From 1989 to 2001, Wetlands Preserve in Tribeca was one of New York's most celebrated rock clubs, where it famously fused cutting-edge music with environmental activism. It's now credited with giving birth to the modern jam-band scene and launching the careers of Dave Matthews, Blues Traveler and Phish. Relix Magazine editor and filmmaker Dean Budnick chronicles the environmentally friendly club's legend with rare vintage concert footage and accounts from the club's former owners, rock critics, musicians and club regulars."

The amount of great music that took place in this club is simply staggering. Hip Hop, soul, fusion, jam bands, and mixes of all of the above and more - it was there on a nightly basis. AND, many of these bands are Source Audio users - Soulive, Disco Biscuits, moe., and more. But, as the music and personalities of the bands amaze and entertain us, the documentary has a sad eclipse as the club closes down due to the changing of the economic tide in lower Manhattan.

Environmental activism was a huge element of the club, and even a club contract is depicted showing that only "organic ink" is to be used on the club's in-house machines. Documentary maker Dean Budnick, co-creator of the Jammys and Editor at both Relix and Jambands.com, saddled up up with the Wetlands' last club owner Peter Shapiro to bring us this triumphant and inspiring, yet tragic tale. Well it's not tragic if the spirit of environmental awareness lives on - and certainly the great music featured in this film absolutely does just that.
