What comes to mind when you think of the "wah wah"?Could it be: George Harrison's song of the same name?
Eric Clapton's solo on "White Room"?
The "Theme From Shaft"?
the great riff on UFO's "Rock Bottom"?
When I think of the common uses of the "wah", of course I think of the great uses (as listed above) - but the wah, due to the cliched' overuse of a funk clean rhythm part, has been given the "Shaft" (bad pun intended) by it's exponents.
One way to put that to rest by finding previously unexplored subtleties of the wah?
Try the Hot Hand. Set it for minimal sensitivity, and you can add an expressive vocal-like phrasing to a melody line, or clean arpeggios.
Where is the resemblance to the wacka-wacka-WACKa-wack rhythm parts that we are so tired of? Well, of course it's easy to do if you want that, but you'll be finding so many more available nuances, you might forget you ever heard that to begin with. Can you dig it?
