Producer/DJ Phutureprimitive Uses the Hot Hand MIDI-EXP Controller from Source Audio

Tuesday, August 02, 2011

Last March the Source Audio crew braved the brutal New England winter to join an awe-inspiring psychedelic dub dance party at the Middle East Nightclub in Cambridge, MA. On this night the over-stuffed basement club became the focal point of Boston’s thriving underground dance scene with two international DJ masterminds, Ott and Source Audio endorser Phutureprimitive (a.k.a. Rain), sharing the bill. Upon the release of his latest record, Kinetik, our man Phutureprimitive received a torrent of attention from the press. Theuntz.com called Kinetik, “a bass-loaded sound explosion of synthetically-created ambiance complete with a tribal flavor.” Splendidbeats.com said, “Kinetik announces without a doubt that Phutureprimitive’s looooong awaited second album is finally here. And there was much rejoicing!”

We’d heard several reports that Phutureprimitive was turning a lot of heads with one of Source Audio’s most dramatically forward thinking pedals, the unbelievably awesome Hot Hand MIDI-EXP Controller. If you’re not familiar with Hot Hand let me explain. The Hot Hand Wireless Adapter is a super lightweight ring compatible with all Source Audio pedals. With a wave of the hand users are able to control various effect parameters. The MIDI-EXP dramatically expands the functionality of Hot Hand, making it possible to access parameters of any third party software or effect with MIDI capabilities. It’s an incredible technology that offers an entirely new set of options for controlling filters modulation, delay, pitch shifting, drive level, and a lot more.

Good news - we caught plenty of spine-tingling moments from Phutureprimitive’s set on film. Check out these sizzling live renditions of "Predatory Instincts" and "Xotica. " One of Hot Hand’s great strengths is the inherently theatrical element it brings to a performance. Rain thoroughly embraces the opportunity with a seriously exciting dose of old school rock n’ roll grandstanding. In the highly complicated and technology based genre of electronic music, you’ve got to love a piece of gear that allows you to step away from the control panel and address the crowd directly in a thoroughly dramatic fashion.

Rain had this to say: "I created many presets on the MIDI-EXP & ring, so at any time I could decide to control for example the wet / dry amount on delays, or a bit crusher, both of which can be seen in the video [above].  Other presets are set to control delay times, gated effects, low pass & high pass filters, chorus, phaser, beat repeat and glitch fx.”

If you need more Phutureprimitive, we hiiiiighly recommend his new record, Kinetik. Click here to visit the Phutureprimitive website and sample the music from Kinetic. We also can’t say enough about the live show, check his tour dates and get out to the club when the man rolls into town.
