Nels Cline

We recently posted a blog about Rolling Stone magazine’s list of  “Top 20 New Guitar Gods”. In it, we proudly pointed out that five of them ( Warren Haynes, Jim James, Carl Broemel, Chuck Garvey and Kaki King) use Source Audio pedals. Well, we just found out that number has increased to six. Nels Cline, the guitarist for the band Wilco and “New Guitar God”, listed the Soundblox Tri-Mod Phaser as part of his current effects rig in the July issue of Guitar Player. We’ve got a few huge Wilco fans in the office, so we’re all pretty fired up about it.

Nels Cline defies categorization—his first notable moments came in the late 70s, bouncing around the improvisational jazz circuit. Since that time he’s performed and recorded with a massive and diverse collection of musicians ranging from jazz bassist Charlie Haden to Sonic Youth’s avant-rock leader, Thurston Moore.  Nels’ playing is a beautiful blend of rock, jazz and country tradition with a bold proclivity for sound and tone exploration.  Wilco have also made a career out of twisting American rock, folk, and country traditions into a sound entirely their own, so the enlistment of Nels in 2004 couldn’t have worked out better. He adds an incredible new facet to an already great band.

In addition to being a fantastic player, Nels is clearly a man who knows effects pedals. He’s a master in the art of tone, and pedals play a huge role in the creation of his sound. It’s safe to assume that he’s heard a few phasers in his life, so the fact the he chooses to use the Soundblox Tri-Mod Phaser certainly says something about the pedal. Introducing a new phaser pedal into a crowded market is a tough task, but the popularity of the Tri-Mod continues to grow among both guitarists and bass players. Its selling points are pretty easy to comprehend—the pedal sounds amazing and gives the user a ton of phase options. The Tri-Mod Phaser offers eleven different effects types, ranging from a traditional Leslie sound to more complicated multi-peaked frequency response curves that produce some very unique flavors.  Check out this demo of the pedal.

Here is another very cool video featuring Nels talking about his gear. Unfortunately, this movie was shot before he added the Soundblox Tri-Mod Phaser to his rig, but it’s a very entertaining piece that really showcases his talent and desire to discover new sound possibilities.
