Life is Good for Source Audio (part deux)

Friday, September 24, 2010

Day Two of the Life is Good festival took on a chiller vibe with more acoustic acts such as Guster, Jason Mraz, Brett Dennen and Corrinne Bailey Rae leading the charge.  Jeff and I felt like we were really hitting the groove of things and perhaps most important of all, I was completely feeling the top-notch catering we were enjoying in the back stage area.

We spent the morning talking some serious shop with longtime Source Audio endorsee and Guster utility man Joe Pisapia.  We touched on the possibilities of using the Soundblox Pro Multiwave Distortion as an outboard effect in studio productions.  What would it wound like on a snare drum?  On a whole kit?  Vocals?  There are so many possibilities to that pedal that have simply gone unexplored.

Shortly after talking with Joe, we were treated to an impromptu guitar and bass jam from Source Audio endorsee and Trombone Shorty guitarist Pete Murano and bassist Mike Bass.  I love Pete's style of playing.  He's like a boxer on the guitar as he bounces to the groove and then sticks you with these quick jabs of mean licks and then pummels your ears with a lengthy bluesy phrase when you least expect it.  You can hear his soloing in the video at the beginning of this blog.

When it came time for Brett Dennen to start his set at the Good Vibes stage, my girlfriend and I hustled over to get a good spot from behind the scenes.  We've both been huge fans of his writing ever since her sister gave us a copy of one of his CD's before a wedding weekend.  That's how music really gets spread...through relationships and experiences.  It was our first time seeing Brett Dennen play and his set was an absolute delight.  At one point during Dennen's guitar solo, I noticed that his overdrive pedal was acting up on him, screeching and hollering.  As he walked off the stage, I told him we had the perfect solution in the form of the Soundblox Classic Distortion.  He later checked out the pedal at our booth backstage and we ended up handing him a pedal to take with him on the road for his next show.

While we were demoing some of the other effects for Brett Dennen including the prototype Guitar Envelope Filter, Jai Dillon walked over to take a pass through the bass pedals.  Jai is currently playing bass with Jason Mraz who was headling the festival that night.  He loved the Soundblox Bass Envelope Filter so much, we pulled it off our set up and had his guitar tech strap it onto his pedal board for the show that night!  Needless to say, we documented the entire experience.
