It Might Get Loud
Have you seen this yet? As a guitarist, I’d have to say that it is a “Must See”, for a number of reasons. This alone is reason enough for me:
The film looks at three guitarists, Jack White, the Edge, and Jimmy Page – depicted alone, and the three together, discussing their own music and their influences, as well as playing alone and together.
Their viewpoints are often in contrast, yet have a common thread of passion and raw emotion which unites them.
The film starts with Jack White silently building (with a coke bottle for a bridge, no less) what takes shape as a primitive one-string slide guitar – and he then proceeds to plug it in to what seems to be a fuzz unit and a small combo amp and create an absolute fury of sonic mayhem. It that does not make you laugh, check your pulse.
There are numerous insights to their pasts – one of the most notable being Mr. Page discussing his family’s moving to a new flat when Jimmy was a youngster, and finding an acoustic guitar in the house – coincidentally left behind by the previous tenants. When Page became inspired by some music he heard, he then remembered that he had one of these instruments lying around the house. How lucky for us!
Edge shows his awesome rack of gear as well as a most impressive pedalboard - and gives a demonstration of how simple parts take on greater complexity by adding echo and distortion. He also takes us to the bulletin board in the hallway of his childhood school, where drummer Larry Mullin first posted an ad seeking musicians for a band. At that point, Edge had very little time playing guitar at all. He basically learned "on the job" while the band formed.
Another interesting factor is their differences of views of technology – White distrusts it altogether, as evidenced by his clothing and automobiles, while Edge looks ahead; fully embracing technology. Page seems to do both. They all are greatly inspired by the great American bluesmen, and it is quite compelling to hear where these three influential players have taken those seeds. Get this movie!!!!!!!!!!!
