Herman Li Plays the Hot Hand

Thursday, April 22, 2010

We discovered this video a couple of years ago on the D’Addario website, in it DragonForce guitarist Herman Li explains how he uses the Source Audio Motion Controller Ring. Li was one of the first major artists to incorporate Hot Hand into his playing, so we’ve had plenty of contact with him over the years. He’s also become one of our go-to consultants for new product ideas, but until this point we haven’t had any great footage of Herman talking about Hot Hand. As soon as we saw this video we knew we had to get it on our website, so this past January our company president, Roger Smith , took a walk to the D’Addario booth at the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim and asked if they would be willing to let us use it—they happily agreed and we certainly can’t thank them enough for their generosity.

The cool thing about this video is that it comes from a time when Herman had just started incorporating the ring into his playing. At that point, he only used it with the Motion Controlled Wah Filter. Since then we’ve hooked him up with a Motion Controlled Phaser/Flanger and the MIDI-EXP pedal. Actually, Herman’s desire to control MIDI messaging with the ring was a major catalyst in the development of the MIDI-EXP pedal. The video below illustrates how Herman uses the pedal to send MIDI messages to 3rd party effects. In the video he controls the expressive capabilities of a pitch-shifting pedal through the Continuous Controller function.  You’ll hear him jump up an octave with a simple hand gesture (any similarity this gesture may have to those considered crude or offensive is purely coincidental…yeah, right!) and then back down with the reverse gesture. It’s clear that the MIDI-EXP is a powerful tool for any technology-embracing musician.

We’d like to thank D’Addario on more time for giving us permission to use this video.
