Note how some players will want a multitude of boost/overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals, while others rely on the amp's distortion.

Which ever way you go, it's an extremely cost-effective way of getting new and versatile sounds. Sure, a slew of boutique pedals custom wired will set you back a pretty penny - but there's no alternative to what great pedals can do with a great guitar and amp.
