Godsticks using Source Audio

Thursday, November 18, 2010

We are very happy to report that Darran Charles of Welsh band Godsticks is currently playing our Phaser/Flanger for their current tour. Darran, who plays guitar, keyboards and handles lead vocals, formed the band in 2006 with Dan Nelson on bass, and Steve Roberts on drums and keys, and were initially a "prog cover band".

Soon thereafter, as all the great bands from the Beatles onward have done, they began writing their own songs - and released thier eponymously titled EP in 2009, and received great acclaim from the prog community at large.  Their tunes combine great linear interplay which reminds me of the 1980's incarnation of King Crimson, with instrumental flourishes that slightly echo Bill Bruford's 1980's quartets, but within clever and memorable song formats with terrific vocal harmonies and melodies. And, like the very best prog bands, they know how to leave space, as well as fill it up.

Their CD was featured on the very first edition of ‘Classic Rock Presents Prog’ magazine in March 2009 and not surprisingly they were voted in the top 5 best new bands in the inaugural ‘Classic Rock Presents Prog’ poll. In July 2010, the band released their debut album ‘Spiral Vendetta’, which received an excellent review in Guitar Player magazine.

Listed below are other reviews of the band:

"Godsticks is a band that needs to be watched.  This is an excellent addition to any music collection ("progressive" or otherwise) and I have full confidence that the band can only get even better from here."
[Michael Sharkey - Prog Archives]

"Godsticks definitely brought a refreshing approach to the contemporary prog music scene and we are not the only ones thinking this way. It is always good to discover bands like this since they don't come to our attention very often." [The Prog Files]

And, of course, here's an impressive tune from their EP.
