Art of the Stompbox DVD cover

One of the great things about stompboxes is their inherent collectability. If you’re a guitar player and occasionally exhibit the somewhat obsessive behavior of a collector (and I really haven’t met many musicians who don’t suffer from this subtle personality flaw), than effect pedals are pretty damn enticing—there are tons to choose from, they’re all very different in look and sound, and for the most part, they aren’t unbelievably expensive. Yes, the power of the pedal is undeniable, and the more you can get your hand (and feet) on the better. I mean let’s face it, where would The Edge, Jimi Hendrix, Jonny Greenwood or David Gilmour be without their stompboxes? Well…they’d still be smoking guitar players, but you get my point—a perfectly placed effect can often turn an otherwise unremarkable riff into something truly special and make a truly killer riff even killerer! Anyway, if you share this obsession with FX, there is a new DVD available that is definitely worth your time. It’s called The Art of the Stompbox and it features two of the best experimental guitar effects artists of our time, Nels Cline and Henry Kaiser. Take a look at the video below to get a preview of this FX love-fest, and keep an eye out for our Soundblox Tri-Mod Phaser.

Cline and Kaiser are certainly two of the biggest stompbox artists in the game today. These guys have explored the possibilities of effect pedals for over a combined half-century. In addition to his work with Fred Frith, Kaiser released multiple collaborations with the great songwriter/guitarist Richard Thompson and former Captian Beefheart drummer John French. He also contributed music to the soundtrack of the critically acclaimed documentary Grizzly Man. Cline is famous for his work in the bands Wilco and the Nels Cline Singers as well as a diverse set of collaborations with artists like jazz bassist Charlie Haden, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and Mike Watt of the Minutemen.

The Source Audio crew is pretty excited about the Soundblox Tri-Mod Phaser’s inclusion in this video. Nels Cline has talked about using the pedal in the July 2010 issue of Guitar Player Magazine and gives the pedal some considerable face time during the video’s discussion on modulation effects. The DVD is an extension of Art of the Stompbox exhibit currently residing at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California.  We’re proud to say that our Soundblox Pro pedals are a part of this cool new exhibit that takes you through the entire progression of effects pedals from the 1940s to present. The show runs from June 1st through September 2010. So if you’re in the area, definitely take a trip out to the MOMM before it’s over.
