Are you rocking out, getting funky tones with your Soundblox Pro Multiwave Bass Distortion and Soundblox BEF but looking for a few tips on how to take that funk to the next level? A quick look at the settings used by Mike Gordon, bass master pro from Phish, should point you in the right direction!
On the Multiwave, Mike's distortion of choice in his preset is the Singleband Foldback #19, which has a nice spindly texture. It works really well for that signature 'Cactus' sound we hear on songs like "Boogie On Reggae Woman" and some of the bass solos in "You Enjoy Myself". We can see that his blend is primarily distorted with the Clean signal cut to half it's original volume. No action from the EQ here to tweak that distortion tone even further. Mike's clean signal is EQ'd elsewhere.
We can see that the BEF is late in the signal chain, being the 17th of Mike's 19 effects pedals. Remember kids, it's always a good idea to place your envelope filters after your distortions (3 out of 4 funk doctors agree). Mike's using the 2 Pole Low Pass #7 Filter here on the BEF with a maximum speed Attack and slightly slowed Decay for some punchy filter sweeps that linger. Also note that he has the Sweep Range set to only about halfway. You want that quick attack and a small range if you're working with some fast finger funk like Mike is known for in his improvisations.
We know that he adjusts the BEF by hand on stage, so we cannot speak to whether or not this is the setting he uses in tandem with his Soundblox Pro Multiwave Bass Distortion, but from the playing we've heard, we can say that this setting will certainly get you that sound!
Eyyyy! Mike Gordon was a little star struck when he met Jesse 'Mr. Pibb Himself' Remignanti and politely asked for a photo of the two of them. Jesse obliged.
