American Idol - Are You Guilty?

Ok, I will come clean. I occasionally watched American Idol this year.
In the past, a mere mention of the show and its contestants would send me into an elitist rant, complete with facial guestures and exaggerated comments that would befit Morrie Seinfeld or Frank Costanza. It's taken me over 30 years to build my musical comfort zone - and I don't give it up very easily.
It much easier to listen to an old favorite, that I understand:
But, sometimes I just have to step out of my Cardboard Castle and have a look around at what I spend most of my time ignoring.
So, yes I actually watched a few Americal Idols this year - and actually - I liked quite a few tunes and performances that I heard. The problem isn't the talent - there's plenty of it there (and as I have been attempting to sing on a few of my original tunes at home, nobody appreciates the hard work of good singing as someone who can't do it!), but it's the glitzy packaging and same old boring songs that I can't stand. A singer going up on a stage and trying to sing a Whitney Houston song better not only do a better version than the original, but a different version as well. It's like going on stage and playing a Jeff Beck, Steve Vai tune or "Eruption" better than the inventor - it can't be done. And unles you're tyring to be in a cover band, don't try. Work those ideas into another tune. The sad thing is that the contestants just keep doing it. What was nice about Adam Lambert was that he shook up arrangements, just like David Cook did last year. That was just as powerful as any vocal gymnastics.
But we did get to hear Slash join Adam onstage for some Zeppelin, which was most definately one of the show's high points.
Maybe I should emerge from my musical comfort zone more often.
