Adrian Belew using Multiwave!

Monday, December 29, 2008

Which one guitarist since Hendrix is synonymous with a singularly distinctive and identifiable use of effects?

If you really think hard about it, the answer has got to be no other than Adrian Belew.

When I first saw Adrian with King Crimson on the Displine tour at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles in the early 1980’s, I had no idea what awaited me. I had heard “Elephant Talk”, and wrongly assumed that the pachyderm-trumpeting and other insect-y sounds wore courtesy of Mr. Fripp, and that Adrian was a glorified rhythm player holding up a white canvas for Fripp, Tony Levin and Bill Bruford to color upon. Had I listened to any of Adrian’s previous work with Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, or David Bowie, I would have been more prepared.

Well you only have to listed to that one album (oops, cd or MP3) to realize what a creative force was at work. And, combine that with Beat, Three of a Perfect Pair and the later Thrak and you really get an education.

So it is easy to see that we at Source Audio feel quite blessed that Adrian is currently using our Multiwave Distortion unit in the studio. Adrian recently contacted us, and quoted the all too familiar McDonald’s catch phrase “I’m lovin’ it” when we asked him his thoughts on our most popular pedal.

Don’t think for a second that Adrian has been out of sight, either – look forward to a tour in 2009 with his trio. Check here to see what he's been up to.
